What a joy to be able to use a camera with such personal history. And some great albums on your list. A few would make mine too (Ok Computer, Remain in Light, Low, The Queen is Dead)!
thanks for the mention! i'm very happy to hear that an old "soviet tank" had that effect on you, it is guaranteed that once used it will change the way one sees and approach photography. definitely made me think. i don't advocate for using only old cameras but using one once in a while will do no harm to nobody
I love that you gave the camera a chance. Also having spent some formative years in both neighborhoods, the images of bay parkway and sheepshead bay surprisingly bring up some nostalgia. (Nevada is great and all .. but entirely different)
What a great story of reconnecting with your past. This also really stood out to me “You need to focus manually, set the exposure manually, and there’s no instant gratification like you get with digital. But in a way, that slowness was a breath of fresh air. It forced me to really think about each shot.”
A camera with a story like this has to shoot unique pictures. It is an artifact of history and thus the images feel Soviet, perhaps! Anyway a very interesting story thank you
I ain't nit pick your music list. Let's just say a fairly decent Venn diagram exists between us. A great family story to boot.
Are you following Darin? He's got done great old camera posts. https://open.substack.com/pub/daringabbert?r=1rk0p5&utm_medium=ios

Thanks so much, Andrew. Glad to hear from you. And doubly glad we have similar musical tastes (if only mostly 🤓)

Thank you, Katya! Are you in Vegas or Reno, or somewhere out of the hustle-bustle of the busy streets?
I’m in Reno (and compared to NYC it feels out of the hustle-bustle pretty much anywhere here)
Slowing down, taking your time, enjoying the process, that's a much better way to look through the viewfinder.
Thank you, Darin! It is, indeed.
This is a wonderful story, Alex! I am glad you dusted it off, used it and share the photographs with us. I hope to see more.
Thank you very much, Susanne!
Nice images, worth the effort!
Love it. Great story and slowing down is always worthwhile, for those of us who tend to go-go-go.
And I'm with Mark, a solid Venn exists between the three of us, I think. I was particularly pleased to see This Year's Model on the list :-)
Thanks very much, Donn! I’m happy to hear that many of us on Substack have a similar taste in music. I thought I was out of touch 🤓
Well, the fact that there are several of is isn't exactly proof... But at least you have company!

Thank you for reading and commenting, Simon.
Love the photos, commentary, and playlist! You were right: this one's a keeper!
Thanks very much, Caroline!
Nice images, worth the effort! And we have so many favourite records in common that I will be investigating the less familiar ones…
